Roadmap 2023: bringing blockchain-based trading to traditional finance

Blockchain has long been hailed as a revolutionary technology. So far, it has only been linked to volatile crypto assets like bitcoin and now associated with the $8bn demise of FTX. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for Swarm; a challenge because it tarnishes the reputation of blockchain-associated businesses; an opportunity because it highlights the need for a different approach to blockchain, regulation and decentralized finance.

Swarm offers investors a way to issue and trade traditional assets, such as stocks and bonds, in a novel, blockchain based way. We are regulated, so investors can trust our platform. And we use decentralized architecture, which offers investors transparency over where their assets are, making them more secure.

We offer our customers a hybrid model, embracing the advantages of blockchain-based trading, such as flexibility, speed and 24/7 risk management, with the trust and asset range typically enjoyed by traditional exchanges.

The exciting thing about blockchain is all of its use cases are still unknown. Just like with the advent of internet technology, we did not know back then that people would spend their lives on social media, email and online shopping. Similarly with blockchain, the possibilities really are endless. Swarm, through its regulated decentralized infrastructure, is primed to take advantage of this evolution.

Expanded our trust and data capabilities to connect real-world assets to DeFi. This included on-demand abilities within the KYA process and regular proof-of-asset capabilities so that token holders can verify the underlying assets.

Tokenized the first set of traditional securities that could be traded on a regulated and decentralized infrastructure. Bringing stocks and bond ETFs on chain, we significantly expanded the value held on chain and diversified the types of assets available to trade. These tokens enable crypto holders to invest in yield-bearing financial instruments from the traditional world, without moving out of the blockchain ecosystem.
Entered a partnership with Mattreum, a digital identity layer for real world assets on Ethereum, that will bring traditional assets on-chain for institutional investors to trade on its decentralized and regulated infrastructure.
Integrated with Pyth data oracle to facilitate more real world assets (RWAs) to move on chain.

Launched staking for SMT holders, enabling users to stake SMT against the tokenized securities listed on the regulated Swarm trading platform to earn rewards. As SMT is an ERC-20 token, this initiative lets users who cannot access the Swarm platform to take advantage of the RWA narrative.

Integrated with Coinbase wallet infrastructure, expanding the self custodial wallet tooling for Swarm users.
Announced Wrapped partnership who have migrated assets to Swarm's regulated custody environment for the purpose of cross-chain wrapping and unwrapping of cryptocurrencies to use in DeFi.

Launched onboarding API, allowing institutions and enterprises who do not have a know-your-customer (KYC) and anti money laundering (AML) provider to offer regulatory-compliant tokenized securities and trading to their users under German law.

Launched Open dOTC- public goods infrastructure for trading real-world assets.

Still to come:

2024

  • Launch NFT bundles, enabling users to structure their own financial products based on their needs. Bundling will be enforced by verified data elements embedded into the NFTs.
  • Launch institutional-grade managed wallet solution, which will be an optional enhancement of interacting with the Swarm infrastructure. Managed wallets can simplify platform interaction for users who either lack the requisite knowledge to effectively manage their own wallet or require a managed solution for automation purposes.
  • Launch smart pools – this will allow for regular indexing and rebalancing, which is particularly critical for the development of index products. Index products will be an important tool for securitising crypto-native products so that institutions can access them.
  • Enter institutional partnership with ESG focus.
  • Develop new strategic roadmap for Swarm based on where the customers, market and regulatory developments are.
